We are often asked: "Do people even ask for a cover letter these days?"
Well the answer is, not always - sometimes it's asked for, many times it's optional, and sometimes there's no option to include one.
So a couple of key points to make here are:
That said, we can write three types of letter and always create at least three-quarters of a page of copy, usually a full page (500+ words) - the majority of which differentiates from CV text. This is text you could also utilise for bios, LinkedIn profiles, branding statements and more. We can also do 1,000-2,000 words for certain types of applications - let us know and we'll devise a bespoke quote for you.
The best sort - those meeting specific criteria as part of an application. We use our failsafe methodology of almost explicitly covering each of the job requirements (so there's no genuine cause for binning your application); giving 'icing on the cake' extra information (so there's every cause to put you forward for the role); and giving extra reasons for both applying for (e.g., complimenting/showing passion for the company) and being given the role (such as directly stating what you can do for the company at this time).
These are ideally for one type of role, or potentially two/three closely linked types - with guidance on where and how to tailor it for specific roles and role types. A perfectly fine and the most common option asked for, due to its ability to cover off many or most scenarios. Given clients' backgrounds, it's usually pretty easy to do - going into detail on all achievements and value brought to previous companies, plus all those desirable character traits, so recruiters can easily place you in their roles. You would be advised to change the ordering or delete certain parts to more align with specific roles and role types.
These are to send a contact unsolicited - with guidance on where and how to tailor it for specific role types and companies. Not a very commonly asked for option but none-the-less a perfectly viable letter type. Again, detail will be written on, essentially, why you are an outstanding candidate that should be considered for specific types of openings. This is a great option to showcase your dedication to working for a specific company, which the company itself will appreciate.
